3 Steps College Students Can Take to Save Money and the Environment!
Bob Wolf, the Green Train Project's founder, offers college students three, easy steps to make a huge, positive impact on saving our natural resources.
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, September 14, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- College students accumulate up to 100 tons of garbage each month, per campus (http://www.sustainer.org/dhm_archive/index.php?display_article=vn308trashed). Beer cans, pizza boxes, note pads, garbage bags—it all adds up, especially when multiplied by millions. Our country's collegiate population is also one of the largest factors of waste.
To reduce the population's carbon footprint, and the course of the environment, college students, if nothing else, can do just three things to decrease the amount of waste of natural resources. These are recycle, resuse, and upgrade. The following steps will put you onto the right track of being environmentally friendly...even if you cannot spell it.
1. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Most college campuses have their own recycling center in the dorms. All you need to do is start putting actual recyclables in the blue bin you are using as an extra trash can. BONUS: If you live in a state that pays for cans and bottles, you can make some extra cash.
American's made about $1 billion recycling cans last year (http://www.cancentral.com/funFacts.cfm).
2. Reuse, reuse, reuse. Remember that summer beach bag you bought that you only used twice? When you make your weekly trips to the grocery store, take it with you. Odds are, it will be more durable than plastic or paper and save on the temporary use before you trash them. BONUS: Your neighbors won't be knocking on your door for late night snacks when they never see you with grocery bags.
3. Upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. Trade in all your 64 watt bulbs for energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs, which only use 15 watts. Fluorescent bulbs will last 10 times longer than traditional light bulbs. They can be found at your local superstore and will fit in almost any light fixture. BONUS: If you live in off-campus housing these bulbs will save you money on your next power bill.
These simple acts will help save the environment and can save you some money. With everyone talking about going green lately, it's hard to recognize what is really helping and what is for show. A good rule of thumb is if it is simple and makes sense, it is usually the right thing for the environment. Saving the Earth consists of the little things we are continuing to do each day.
ABOUT BOB WOLF AND THE GREEN TRAIN PROJECT
The four-year vision of Bob Wolf, The Green Train Project, started in 2005, will educate the public and enlist global support to help reverse the continued waste and destruction of our planet. Scheduled to depart from Portland in April 2010, The Green Train, a solar-powered, biodiesel machine, will pass through every geographic region in the USA during a 10-week, 28-state whistle stop tour finishing in Washington, D.C. The Green Train is planning a trek in Europe in 2011 and a simultaneous train ride on each continent of the world each year after that. As The Green Train holds informational festivals and whistle stops throughout the nation, the public can meet the train in small town America, as well as the larger cities, to learn more and become involved. The messages on which Wolf's project focuses are:
• Everyone can make a positive difference to the future of the earth
• Being green is simple and saves money
