Green Train Highlights 5 Ways Colleges Are Conserving Energy and Money!
Green Train Project, founded by humanitarian Bob Wolf, highlights five ways colleges are conserving energy and money!
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, October 03, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Green Train Project highlights five colleges and their efforts of conserving energy, while at the same time saving money. These unique conservation efforts go above and beyond the traditional recycling trash bin, which brought much pride and sustainability to many different universities.
• Though recycling plastic bottles and paper are highly implemented, colleges, such as UC Santa Cruz found a more productive way to reach out to their students. Last year, the college eliminated cafeteria trays in an attempt reduce food waste and cut food and water bills. Since then, the university managed $100,000.00 in annual savings. This vast amount of money could be used towards other go-green projects.
• Harvard University Kennedy School of Government uses Energy Star software for their computers, which allows monitors to go into a low-power sleep mode during periods of inactivity. According to Energy Star, the switch to an energy saving computer method has saved the university more than $14,000.00 a year on its energy bills, by enabling 800 computer monitors to power down to sleep mode when not in use.
• Engineering undergraduates at University of Washington demanded campus administrators to practice more environment-friendly policies. Students found a peculiar way to save energy by using cooking oil from campus eateries to fuel university cars. According to reporter Christine Frey, these students developed a solar panel system that collects enough sunlight to power an energy-efficient home for one year. This process encouraged faculty members and students to drive biodiesel cars.
• Dave Kohler, Director of Facilities Management at Pacific Lutheran University, proposed an idea for his colleagues. His movement called "Can the Can," encouraged students and professors to fill 1.5 plastic buckets with materials that aren't recyclable and compost everything else. This allowed students to recognize the type of waste that could be recycled—even apple cores.
• University of Minnesota Duluth found that transportation is key when saving energy. According to a survey conducted by the Office of University Relations, 65 percent of students rode the bus and car pooled. Students realized by using free transportation, their wallet was able to save thousands of dollars throughout a given year.
THE GREEN TRAIN PROJECT
The Green Train Project, the four-year vision of Bob Wolf, started in 2005, is a concert and train tour featuring top musicians, actors, writers, and artists traveling coast to coast to educate the public and enlist global support to help reverse the continued waste and destruction of our planet. Scheduled to depart from Portland in April 2010, The Green Train, a solar-powered, biodiesel machine, will pass through every geographic region in the USA during a 10-week, 28-state whistle stop tour finishing in Washington, D.C. The Green Train is planning a trek in Europe in 2011 and a simultaneous train ride on each continent of the world each year after that. As The Green Train holds informational festivals and whistle stops throughout the nation, the public can meet the train in small town America, as well as the larger cities, to learn more and become involved. The messages on which Wolf's project focuses are:
• Everyone can make a positive difference to the future of the earth
• Doing just one thing per day, like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, changing a light bulb or unplugging appliances when you're not using them, has a huge impact
• Being green is simple
• Being green saves money
